In early 1976, r100s 6160001 was completed by the bmw factory, and shipped to the us along with 6160002, and 6160003. All 3 bikes were loaned to various magazines and reviewing editors. They were also displayed at various motorcycle shows to gain publicity for bmw’s first 1000cc bike. It was over shadowed by the newer design r100rs. After the publicity campaign, 6160001 was sold to carl (max) s. Dunbar sponsored the bike and entered in the 1978 daytona superbike race (finished 20th). Carl owned and raced the bike for about a year then sold it to jim a. Who owned this bmw for 32 years. Sometime in his ownership, his house caught on fire, and the upper plastic on the bike was burned. The original ignition key bares the damage of the fire. The bike had amassed about 65000 miles at this point. In 2010, a restoration was started. Another bmw r100s (61600xx) in original condition was purchased to be used as a model for the restoration. The carbs are the originals, notice the id plate carry over from the 900/6 series. These were later replaced by black plastic covers. Transmission by oak, final drive by vech, and heads by randy long. Also an omega electronic, and improved charging/starting components have been installed. A 40mm exhaust is installed, and a 38mm is included. Many restoration pictures and internal details are available. This bmw has been shown at "riding into history" a couple of times. This bmw runs great, and i have put another 1000 miles since the restoration.
